How to make onigiri

What is Onigiri?

Onigiri, also known as Japanese rice balls, are a beloved staple of Japanese cuisine. These triangular or oval-shaped snacks are made from seasoned or plain rice and are often wrapped in nori (seaweed). They can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as pickled plum (umeboshi), salted salmon, tuna mayo, or even tempura. Onigiri is both a convenient and satisfying meal or snack, perfect for picnics, lunchboxes, or a quick bite on the go.

A Brief History of Onigiri

The history of onigiri dates back over 1,000 years to the Heian Period (794–1185), when rice balls were packed as portable meals for travelers and soldiers. In the past, onigiri was shaped by hand, and each rice ball was wrapped in bamboo leaves for preservation. As time went on, the use of nori became popular, and onigiri evolved into the iconic form we know today. It’s a symbol of Japanese home cooking and remains a comfort food for many.
