Bancha is a general term for tea made from tea leaves that have been harvested from new shoots, or from tea leaves that have grown large and hardened. In Shizuoka and Tokyo, unroasted green light blue bancha is common, but in the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture, bancha is the brown light blue bancha (hojicha) that is roasted over high heat while retaining the shape of the large tea leaves. )”. Harajuen's ``bancha'' is from this Izumo region. The leaves are open and the stems and branches are still inside, but the tea has a fragrant and earthy flavor.
