Opis

The Book of Tea is one of the most famous works explaining Japanese aesthetics to the Western world. Written in 1906 by art critic and cultural philosopher Okakura Tenshin (Okakura Kakuzō), this bilingual edition presents the original English text alongside its Japanese translation, allowing readers to experience both the language and the philosophy of Japan at the same time.

Born in Yokohama during the late Edo period, Okakura grew up speaking English and became an international intellectual. While studying under American scholar Ernest Fenollosa, he devoted his life to protecting traditional Japanese art at a time when Westernization threatened its survival. He later founded the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (today Tokyo University of the Arts) and the Japan Art Institute, becoming one of the central figures of modern Japanese art history.

In this book, Okakura uses tea and the tea ceremony (chanoyu) as a gateway to explain the deeper values of Japanese culture — simplicity, harmony, imperfection, humility, and appreciation of transience. Rather than being a manual about how to prepare tea, the work is a philosophical essay describing the entire worldview behind it. Through humor and elegant prose, he introduces Zen thought, aesthetics, architecture, gardens, and daily life, showing how they are all connected to the spirit of tea.

Together with Bushido: The Soul of Japan, this book helped Western intellectuals understand Japanese and East Asian values for the first time. Over a century later, it remains one of the most accessible introductions to the Japanese sense of beauty and the concept often associated with wabi-sabi.

The bilingual layout places Japanese and English side-by-side, making it ideal both as a cultural text and a Japanese learning resource.
