It can happen during a cloudy walk, on a cool spring morning, while driving or during a short lunch break outside. Ultraviolet radiation cannot be seen or felt, and damage may begin before the skin becomes red or uncomfortable. Even a tan is not proof that the skin has “adapted” safely. It is a visible response to damage that has already occurred.
This is one reason UV protection is treated so seriously in Japan. Rather than relying only on sunscreen, many Japanese women use a layered approach combining sun cream, UV-cut parasols, hats, arm covers, gloves, sunglasses and carefully chosen clothing.
The goal is not to hide from daylight. It is to reduce unnecessary UV exposure before the effects become visible.

What Is UV Protection?
UV protection means reducing the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching the skin and eyes.
Effective protection usually combines:
- Shade and avoiding the strongest midday sun
- Clothing that covers the skin
- A wide-brimmed hat
- Sunglasses that block UVA and UVB
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed areas
The World Health Organization recommends using several protective methods together, especially when the UV Index reaches 3 or higher. Shade and clothing should be the first line of protection, while sunscreen should cover areas that remain exposed. Sunscreen should not be used as a reason to stay in strong sunlight for longer.
Quick answer: UV radiation can cause sunburn, pigmentation, premature skin aging, DNA damage, eye injury, immune-system effects and skin cancer. The most reliable protection comes from layering sunscreen with shade, clothing, hats, sunglasses and sun-protective accessories.

UVA vs UVB: What Is the Difference?
Both UVA and UVB can damage the skin, but they behave differently.
What does UVA do?
UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin and contributes strongly to pigmentation, loss of elasticity and premature aging.
It can also pass through ordinary window glass more easily than UVB.
What does UVB do?
UVB is the main cause of sunburn. It directly damages cellular DNA and contributes to skin cancer.
SPF mainly indicates protection against UVB, while Japan’s PA system indicates the level of UVA protection. Both UVA and UVB are involved in long-term skin damage and skin cancer, which is why broad-spectrum protection matters.
What Does UV Radiation Do to the Body?

1. It damages DNA
UV radiation can damage the DNA inside skin cells. Some of this damage is repaired naturally, but repeated or severe exposure can overwhelm the repair process. Mutations may accumulate over time and contribute to the development of skin cancer. Solar radiation is classified as carcinogenic to humans.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.5 million cases of skin cancer and over 120,000 related deaths were recorded globally in 2020. Most skin cancers are primarily associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation.
2. It accelerates skin aging
Sun-related aging is known as photoaging. It may appear as:
- Fine lines and deeper wrinkles
- Loss of elasticity
- Uneven pigmentation
- Dark spots and freckles
- Rough or leathery texture
- Persistent redness
- Dull or uneven skin tone
Unlike temporary dryness, much of the structural damage caused by long-term UV exposure is difficult to reverse completely.
A randomized Australian study followed participants for four and a half years. Those instructed to use sunscreen daily showed 24% less measurable skin aging than participants who used it only when they felt it was necessary.
This suggests that sunscreen is not only a summer holiday product. Consistent use can be an important part of long-term skincare.


3. It causes sunburn—even before pain appears
UVB is the main cause of sunburn, but skin damage can occur before redness becomes visible. A person therefore cannot rely on heat, pain or skin color to decide whether the UV level is safe.
Sunburn is an inflammatory response to excessive damage. Repeated burns, particularly earlier in life, increase long-term risk.
4. It affects the eyes
UV exposure is also an eye-health issue. It may contribute to acute inflammation of the eye and long-term conditions including cataracts. The WHO estimates that approximately 15 million people worldwide are blind because of cataracts and that up to 10% of these cases may be linked to UV exposure.
Dark lenses alone are not enough. The color and price of sunglasses do not prove that they block UV. Choose products clearly labelled as blocking 99–100% of UVA and UVB or offering equivalent UV400 protection.


5. It can affect every skin tone
More melanin provides some natural protection, but it does not make skin immune to UV damage. People with darker complexions can still experience DNA damage, pigmentation problems, premature aging, eye damage and immune-system effects.
Everyone benefits from reasonable sun protection.
Why UV Protection Matters Even Without Sunburn
One of the greatest misunderstandings about UV is that damage only matters when skin becomes red.
In reality, UV exposure accumulates. Short walks, commuting, sitting near a bright window, outdoor shopping and time spent on a balcony can all contribute to a person’s total exposure.
Clouds do not eliminate the problem. UV can remain high under cloud cover, while water, sand, snow and other surfaces can reflect radiation toward the skin.
Children also require protection. The consequences of excessive exposure early in life may not become visible until decades later.
How Japanese Women Protect Their Skin from UV
Japan’s sun-protection culture is highly visible during the warmer months. It is common to see people carrying parasols, wearing long sleeves, using arm covers or protecting their hands while cycling and driving.
This does not mean every Japanese woman follows the same routine. However, Japanese beauty and lifestyle culture offers a useful lesson: do not expect one product to do everything.
A 2024 Japanese consumer survey involving 9,275 respondents found that nearly 90% of female participants practised some form of UV protection. More than 40% reported taking protective measures throughout the year. Sunscreen was the most common method, followed by hats, parasols, skincare and reducing time spent in direct sunlight.
1. Sunscreen Is Only One Layer
Japanese sunscreens are well known for lightweight textures designed to fit into an everyday skincare routine. Many are available as gels, essences, milks, sprays and sticks rather than only traditional thick creams.
The important point, however, is not where a sunscreen was made. Look for broad-spectrum protection and use enough product to form an even layer.
Sunscreen application
The Japanese Ministry of the Environment recommends applying sunscreen before going outside. For the face, its practical guide suggests applying one layer and then repeating the application to improve coverage
It also advises reapplying approximately every two to three hours because sunscreen can be removed by sweat, movement, touching and towels. Product instructions should always take priority because formulations differ
2. The UV-Cut Parasol
A Japanese sun parasol is called a higasa. Unlike a typical rain umbrella, a UV-cut parasol is designed to create portable shade and reduce direct solar radiation.
Parasols are particularly useful because they protect the scalp, face, neck and upper body without requiring another layer of clothing. They can also make hot conditions feel more comfortable.
Japanese research suggests that parasol size, depth, angle and positioning influence effectiveness.

3. Arm Covers, Gloves and Long Sleeves

For clothing, construction matters more than simply covering the body. Tightly woven fabrics generally protect better than loosely woven ones. Protection can decrease when fabric becomes stretched, wet, worn or very thin.
UPF50
A garment rated UPF 50 allows approximately one-fiftieth of UV radiation to pass through, meaning that it blocks around 98%.
Dark, dense fabrics may provide stronger UV protection but can also feel warmer, so purpose-made breathable UV clothing can be more practical in summer.
4. Hats That Protect More Than the Forehead
A baseball cap shades part of the face but leaves the ears, sides of the cheeks and neck exposed. A broad-brimmed hat provides more complete coverage.
Practical protection
The best option is one that is comfortable enough to wear consistently.
A technically excellent hat offers little benefit when it remains at home because it is too heavy, hot or inconvenient.
5. Checking the UV Index

Japan’s Meteorological Agency publishes hourly UV analyses and national maps calculated using information including ozone levels and sunlight conditions. This makes it easier to plan outdoor activity according to actual UV intensity rather than temperature alone.
The UV Index is especially useful because hot weather and strong UV are not the same thing. A cool, clear day can still expose the skin to significant radiation.

Japan Helped Pioneer the PA Sunscreen Rating
The PA symbols seen on Japanese and other Asian sunscreens refer to protection against UVA.
The Japan Cosmetic Industry Association introduced a UVA testing and labelling standard in 1995. The PA++++ category was added in 2013 to indicate very high UVA protection. SPF and PA therefore describe different parts of a sunscreen’s performance: SPF primarily relates to UVB, while PA relates to UVA.
A Parasol Can Help with Heat as Well as UV
Japan’s Ministry of the Environment has promoted parasols not only for UV protection but also as a heat-stress measure.
Field demonstrations found that shade from a parasol could reduce measured heat-stress conditions by approximately 1–3°C. In a small controlled study involving six men, a heat-blocking parasol was associated with around 17% less sweating compared with wearing a hat. These were limited experiments rather than proof that every parasol produces the same result, but they help explain why sun umbrellas are so practical during Japanese summers.
A Tan Offers Very Little Protection
A tan is sometimes described as the skin’s “natural sunscreen,” but the protection is extremely limited. The WHO estimates that a tan in light skin provides protection equivalent to only about SPF 2–4. It is also evidence that the skin has responded to previous UV damage.

Before Going Outside
Check the UV Index rather than relying on temperature or cloud cover.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to the face, ears, neck, chest, hands and any other exposed skin. Apply it evenly and allow it to settle before leaving.

After Sun Exposure
After-sun skincare can support comfort and hydration, but it cannot erase DNA damage or make excessive exposure harmless.
A gentle cleanser, moisturizing lotion and barrier-supporting cream may help when the skin feels dry. Products containing soothing or moisturizing ingredients can be useful, but prevention remains more effective than attempting to correct established sun damage.
UV Protection Should Be Comfortable Enough to Repeat
The most effective UV routine is not necessarily the one with the largest number of products. It is the one you will use consistently.
For one person, that may mean sunscreen and sunglasses. For another, it may include a parasol, arm covers and a lightweight jacket. Japanese sun-care culture shows how protection can become part of clothing, accessories and daily habits rather than an inconvenient task reserved for beach holidays.
