Description
Description
An elegant vintage Japanese porcelain teapot, most likely produced in the tradition of Arita ware, 有田焼, one of Japan’s best-known porcelain-making regions.
A refined vintage Japanese porcelain teapot featuring a delicate hydrangea design in soft pastel colours.
The rounded porcelain body is finished with a translucent pale blue-green glaze that gives the teapot a calm, luminous appearance. Across the front, clusters of hydrangea flowers are surrounded by broad leaves rendered in gentle shades of blue, lavender, pink and green.
The floral decoration is created in yōkoku, 陽刻, a Japanese relief technique in which the pattern is raised from the ceramic surface. The outlines of the petals, flower centres and leaf veins remain visible beneath the glossy glaze, adding depth and a subtle tactile quality to the design. Yōkoku is recognised in Arita porcelain as a method of creating decorative motifs through elevations and recesses in the surface.
The pale blue-green finish recalls seiji, 青磁, or celadon glazing. Traditional celadon develops its characteristic colour through a glaze containing a small amount of iron. Here, the softly coloured glaze enhances the pastel hydrangea motif and creates an elegant, harmonious composition.
