June Peko Peko Box - Rain Season

This month’s PEKO PEKO BOX is inspired by one of the most unique and atmospheric seasons in Japan — tsuyu (梅雨), the Japanese rainy season.

Tsuyu usually arrives in early summer, bringing gentle rain, misty mornings, blooming hydrangeas, croaking frogs, and a calm, nostalgic atmosphere that feels deeply connected to everyday life in Japan. Rather than resisting the rain, many people in Japan embrace this season through seasonal foods, decorations, sweets, and small traditions that make rainy days feel whimsical and comforting.

For this month’s box, we created a selection inspired by the cozy and playful spirit of tsuyu. Inside, you may discover treats inspired by rainy skies, sparkling raindrops, frogs, hydrangeas, and refreshing early summer flavors loved in Japan during this season.

One of the most beloved traditions during tsuyu is making teru teru bōzu (てるてる坊主) - small handmade ghost-like dolls traditionally hung near windows in hopes of bringing sunny weather. Children in Japan still make them before school trips or festivals, giving the rainy season a nostalgic and charming feeling.

Flavors associated with tsuyu and the beginning of Japanese summer often include refreshing and cooling tastes such as ramune soda, ume (Japanese plum), citrus, yogurt, mint, and translucent jelly sweets that resemble water droplets or rain.
